EPISODE 33 - “7 Years” with skydxddy
SHOW NOTES:
Host Shawna Potter talks to SkyDxddy about her song, “7 Years.” They also discuss capital T Trauma, social media’s effect on victim blaming, asking for the help you need, deciding whether to throw bricks or start writing music. You’ll hear a cute little dog whimper, and lots of talk about sexual assault, and the mental health effects that can come with it, like anxiety and depression, and learn some grounding techniques if you’re feeling anxious or activated. It’s a beautiful, raw discussion not to be missed.

SHOW SCRIPT:
Welcome to But Her Lyrics...the show where we delve into the meaning and politics behind the songs of artists you love or are discovering for the first time.
I’m Shawna Potter, singer and lyricist for War On Women - and your host. I wanna thank all my patrons who voted for me to release this episode as the first of 2024 - great choice! Huge trigger warning, just general sexual violence, addiction, self-harm, mental health talk, etc etc.
Today I’m talking with Sky, aka SkyDxddy, a self-described Trauma-core artist about, well, about processing our shit. Right, that’s what it comes down to. Going from bad coping mechanisms to good ones, and how the journey to healing after something traumatic like a sexual assault, can look different for everyone. And if you’re like me and you believe that journey benefits from the help of trained professionals, then you can join me in pushing for truly universal healthcare, more funding for mental health services, and working towards reducing the stigma of receiving mental health care. And hopefully today’s interview helps with that. At least the last bit, but first!

Next up, first interview of 2024, artist SkyDxddy, not to be missed.
[INTERVIEW TIME]
[interview transcript otw]
Thank you Sky for joining me, for being so open about what you’ve gone through. I long for a day where it’s no longer necessary to explain how trauma affects the brain, I long for a day when people get the help they need when they need it, no stigma attached, but in the meantime thank you to everyone that shares their story. Keep listening to hear SkyDxddy’s song “7 Years” in full.

LYRICS
“7 YEARS”
Once upon a time I lost my mind
It’s been seven years since I saw you
Wonder what poor soul you moved onto
Ooh tell me why do I still feel you
They told me that this skin would be brand new
But that’s not true
I still feel you all around me
Pull the trigger heart is pounding
I can’t take this part of life
My mental health has been declining
Horror movie on rewind
I can’t go out with you tonight
I got a date with cyanide
Talk about social suicide, Oh
It’s been seven years since I saw you
Wonder what poor soul you moved onto
Ooh tell me why do I still feel you
They told me that this skin would be brand new
But that’s not true
Mеdications my new best friend
Oxys mixеd with shots of captain
Couch hoppin’ by seventeen
My body used as currency
Drugged up every single day
And nothin’ makes it go away
Drugs just help temporarily
And honestly it’s scaring me
It’s been seven years since I saw you
Wonder what poor soul you moved onto
Ooh tell me why do I still feel you
They told me that this skin would be brand new
But that’s not true
Fuck your family you know you robbed me
Called your slaughterhouse a party
Told the boys "yeah she’s so naughty"
Rip my former body
Golden boy fueled by achievements
Looks are so goddamn deceiving
I’m the proof yet you believe him
They see an Angel, I see a demon
It’s been seven years since I saw you
Wonder what poor soul you moved onto
Ooh tell me why do I still feel you
They told me that this skin would be brand new
But that’s not true
I am the monster you created
Come and watch me feed
You can run
But you can’t hide from me
