EPISODE 38 - "Ghostload" with Husbandry

SHOW NOTES

Join host Shawna as she speaks with Carina Zachary, singer and lyricist for NYC-based band Husbandry, about their song “Ghostload” from the album A Port In A Storm. They met in a punk rock parking lot and it got weirder from there. #ripthecrown

SHOW:

Welcome to But Her Lyrics...the show where we delve into the political lyrics of songs I like, songs I wrote, or topics that I think should be a song. I’m Shawna Potter, singer and lyricist for War On Women - and your host. What you’re about to hear is my unedited interview with Carina Zachary, the phenomenal singer for NYC band Husbandry, from inside a hot van, windows down, in the parking lot of the Crown in downtown Baltimore. You will hear 12 o’clock boys and emergency vehicles in the background, stuff like that. You’ll also hear 2 singers complimenting each other a little bit. I promise it’s not why I keep this podcast going after that first season of breaking down the WOW album WH, but it IS very cool to have an in depth conversation with another singer you don’t really know but admire on the internet and realize you have a lot in common. And it would be just as cool if we had nothing in common, right, people are fascinating, the creative process is fascinating and personal and we definitely dig into that aspect of her work, as well as the meaning behind their song, “Ghostload”

Disclaimer - This interview has some audio interference because of a cell phone nearby. I tried to clean it up as much as I can. I think the interview is worth listening to so I hope you can bear with it. I will reward anyone that listens all the way through - you gotta actually listen all the way through to find out how! But if you gotta check out at some point, I totally get it. We do what we can! What can I say?!

Quickly, I wanna give a huge thanks to my patient patrons. Thanks for putting up with me while I got this episode together.

Alright, here’s my hot van interview with Carina, already in progress…

Ronnie has a cool, trans-affirming hair salon in Seattle, look up Navarro Hair Design. And the rest of my patient, loving, patrons, big thanks for sticking with me this summer. If you made it this far, write to me through my patreon or through my website, give me your address and the code phrase I tucked into the interview, and I’ll send you handwritten lyrics from your fav wow song, or something similar, whatever you want to request.

Maybe once that new Husbandry album comes out I can interview Carina again NOT in a hot van with open windows, so please let me know if you’d like to hear more from her! Thanks to Husbandry for letting me interrupt their show prep time, I’ll be sharing a video of the live performance of Ghostload from that show on Youtube soon (and on my Patreon), so watch out for that, and keep listening to hear the recorded version in full.

GHOSTLOAD

The conversation’s dead but I’m one to be a needle in the eye

Cuz time and time again we waste the words with an itchy finger

on a loaded gun

I’m not here to talk

I’ve gotten beat from always hitting a brick wall

I’m gonna count to ten

I’m gonna spin that chamber ‘round

Won’t even have a chance to see what forced you to the ground

You know how good it gets when perspective stains your mouth

I’m gonna count to ten

See, I’ve got my shiny extra limb

And I’m good at slinging to feel like a bigger man

All loaded up and your body’s shaking

Reconsider an amend

Scapegoats by the dozen line the halls

Each one with a story left to tell

Panic as the empty casings fall

Wondering what excuse you will sell

You’ve got the lead—you’ve got the law

All loaded up—I’ll load

I’m gonna count to ten

I’m gonna spin that chamber ‘round

I’m gonna count to ten

Paranoid

Which of us will draw last?

Paranoid

Who will be the one to stand?

Paranoid

Which of us will draw last?

I’m searching for reasons to loosen my grip

When all I believe in makes you the target

I’m searching for reasons

I loosen my grip

When all I believe in lies in this bullet
